Early one morning, while visiting the firing range to test cannonballs manufactured by the remote iron works, the young commodore sighted a strange creature flying overhead. The man was quickly hushed by other residents, who cautioned their friend that the "Devil" may have heard his remark and taken exception to it. Mayer further noted that none of the local residents would leave their homes to venture outside after dark.
