Even with the numerous eyewitness accounts many people have presented alternate explanations for the legend. Two of which are the Shunka warwa’kin, and the belief that the whole thing may be nothing more than a hoax. The Shunka warwa’kin, is a creature that was said to live in the wilds of the Upper Midwest and was a wolf-like animal that was known to the Native American population and to the early settlers of the region. The name itself means “carrying away dogs” and was often described as possessing qualities characteristic of a large hyena mixed with a wolf, a description which is remarkably close to the descriptions given by eyewitnesses to the Bray Road werewolf.
Perhaps the most popular theory on the Bray Road werewolf’s existence is also the most plausible, it is the belief that the whole thing is nothing more than a hoax. Most of the weight for this theory comes from the fact that all of the witnesses were in one way or another connected to each other. It is also worth mentioning that other than undefined scratches on a couple of vehicles no physical evidence has been found to support the existence of a werewolf.
It is also important to note that the sightings abruptly stopped without rhyme or reason in 1992. This leads many to support the hoax theory as well.
