The first sightings that can be attributed to the legend date back to 1936 in an area near Jefferson, Wisconsin. It is in these early sightings that the beast is described as more of a Bigfoot type creature than a werewolf one.
This first sighting surrounded two nights in the life of a night watchman at an institution. On the first night he came upon the creature kneeling on the peak of a mound of earth, clawing at the ground. The night watchman’s approach then frightened the creature away. Interestingly, the area where the creature was digging was known to be the location of an Indian burial mound. The next night, the night watchman again came upon the same creature digging at the mound. The night watchman described the creature as over six feet tall, covered with dark or black hair, gave off a bad, bad odor like long dead meat. And said it had eyes that looked right into him and that it made a sound, which he described as a three syllable growl.
In 1964 another sighting took place near Delavan, in this one the witness was driving home late at night when his car lights picked up a big hairy creature that jumped the barbed wire fence running along the road with ease. According to the witness the creature was seven or eight feet tall and weighing anywhere between 400 and 500 pounds. Was standing up just like a human, had feet and hands and was running just like a man runs, to him the closet animal he could describe it to was an ape.
The creature was again spotted in 1972, at a farm near Fort Atkinson. A woman living on the farm reported that an eight foot long animal with long black hair had been walking around her farmyard. A few weeks later the creature returned and came right up to her door and tried to get in, when unable to gain entry the creature decided to try the horse barn next. Once inside it took a swat at the horse, and left a gash across its chess 30 inches from one end to the other. After that it crossed the yard and left leaving behind barefoot impressions of more than 12 inches in length. This was the last sighting in which the creature observed was more ape-like than wolf like.
